In the summer of 2022, the farmworker project at Legal Aid Chicago, with the support of a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), undertook to survey farmworkers across Illinois on their knowledge and experience with pesticides. The goals of the project included understanding how frequently workers were encountering pesticides on the job, assessing employer compliance with federally mandated safety requirements, and gauging the efficacy of pesticide safety training workers had received. The farmworker project surveyed 103 workers and presented its findings to staff and officials at the EPA, Illinois Department of Agriculture, and staff at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Pesticide Safety Education Program. The farmworker team continues its pesticide education outreach throughout Illinois. Read their report here.
