Veterans Legal Clinics
Free legal clinics for veterans, current service members, and military families whose income is at or below 80% Chicago Area-Median Income ($49,950 for a household of 1, $57,050 for a household of 2, etc.).

We offer legal assistance on public benefits, including VA benefits, discharge upgrades and character of discharge reviews, and VA debt. For other civil legal aid issues, we offer advice and referrals during the appointment and screen for extended representation by Legal Aid Chicago staff.

Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic

A free legal clinic for low-income taxpayers whose income is at or below 250% of the federal poverty level ($32,200 for a household of 1, $43,550 for a household of 2, etc.).

We provide free tax advice and representation to individuals and families in Cook County with active disputes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regarding your federal income taxes, including:

  • IRS audits, including audits based on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) & Child or Dependent Credit
  • IRS debt collection attempts, including federal tax liens
  • Employee/Independent Contractor Misclassifications and 1099 income reporting issues
  • Tax return preparer fraud
  • Innocent and injured spouse relief
  • Tax-related identity theft
  • Representation before the U.S Tax Court

The Tax Clinic does not generally prepare tax returns or assist with Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) applications. If you need your current year’s tax returns prepared, you should contact a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site by searching at irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep.
